CONFERENCE
AN IMPOSSIBLE PROFESSION
TRANSFERENCE-TRANSMISSION-BECOMING AN ANALYST

"The end of my teaching is, well, to train psychoanalysts who are capable of fulfilling the function known as the subject." (Lacan, 2008, My Teachings, p. 43)

Guest speakers and lecturers

Claus Diether-Rath (Berlin), Karl Josef Pazzini (Hamburg), Avi Rybnicki (Tel Aviv), Gerhard Zenaty (Linz)

The conference's topic:

Based on Lacan's text My teachings, the conference revolved around the questions of how the psychoanalysis of Freund and Lacan is teachable and transmittable. How can what is lost become of any use as a loss? How can such a "rest" have effects? Clinical consequences regarding this topic were discussed in case presentations.

9.10.2010

Vienna - Klaviergalerie, Kaiserstraße 10

CONFERENCE

THE SHOAH AND THE PSYCHOANALYST

Guest speakers

Daphna Amit-Selbst (Tel Aviv), Shlomo Lieber (Kfar Saba), André Michels (Luxemburg), Avi Rybnicki (Tel Aviv)

The conference's topic:

Do the persecution of the Jews and the totalitarian forms of socialization have consequences until today, especially in Austria, on psychoanalytic work and did they in the past?

Psychoanalytic work with people who went through the shoah raises clinical and theoretical questions on both sides, inculding their children and grandchildren; for example the question of collective and subjective history, destructive identifications and anxieties and their various expressions in repetition in a different time.

What were the effects of the shoah on the inner and outer lives of the generation that came after the survivors? How do these experiences manifest themselves in psychoanalyses, also on the side of psychoanalysts that are descendants of the generations of perpetrators / victims?

Austria's "Anschluss" in 1938 lead to the exodus of psychoanalysis from Austria. After 1945, hardly any psychoanalysts returned to Austria. What consequences had / has this for the reestablishment of a psychoanalytic community in Austria?

If Mitscherlich's hypothesis of the "inability to mourn" is still vaild, what does this mean in terms of a still latent and partly quite open anti-Semitism within the Austrian society? Do psychoanalysts have a political responisbility in that regard?

CONFERENCE

THE FOUR FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF PSYCHOANALYSIS

Guest lecturer

Shlomo Lieber (Kfar Saba)

Respondents

Georg Gröller (Wien) Karl Stockreiter (Wien)

How can the four fundamental concepts "unconscious, repetition, transference and drive" be thought of in a new light?

What can the subject know? What does 'subversion of desire' mean?

What is the reality of the unconscious and the function of transference?

CONFERENCE

THE CAUSE OF THE SUBJECT AND THE POLITICS OF THE SYMPTOME

Guest lecturer

Antoni Vincens (Barcelona)

Respondents

Shlomo Lieber (Kfar Saba), Avi Rybnicki (Tel Aviv)

The conference's topic:

On the basis of the second part of Lacan's Seminar XI, we will try to take a closer look at the position of the subject, the status of the unconscious, the function and properties of the symptom in today's global and capitalist society. Is there a new clinic? How should the symptoms we encounter in today's practice be classified? For example, the tendency towards addicitons of all kinds, phenomena of excess, boredom, listlessnes and lack of drive. What consequences does this have for our way of working as psychoanalysts? What answers does psychoanalysis have for a culture that demands immediate satisfaction? This answer will always also have political, subversive character.

CONFERENCE

WHO IS SCHREBER TALKING TO TODAY? PHENOMENA OF DELUSION; THE OTHER AND PSYCHOSIS

Guest lecturers

Daphna Amit-Selbst (Tel Aviv), Pierre Naveau (Paris)

The conference's topic:

Freud understood psychosis as the subject's attempt to define himself "outside" of the paternal function. With Lacan, psychosis can be understood as a productive way of answering to the loss of the "name of the father". The weakness of the paternal function and its change of shape in today's techno-scientific, capitalist society lead to new clinical, political and cultural phenomena and raise new questions and bring new challenges for psychoanalysis; for example regarding the status of the structural diagnosis neurosis, perversion, psychosis and the orientation of the treatment towards the real and the beyond of the Oedipus.

LA PSYCHOANALYSE ET SES PREUVES

(Psychoanalysis and its proof)

Discussants

Eva Laquieze-Waniek (Vienna), Wolfgang Müller-Funk (Vienna)

Topic of the conference:

Some are thinking that the time has come to translate the subjective processes into terms of the neuronal net. - Basing on the Psychoanalysis of Lacanian Orientation, Éric Laurent supports an opposite thesis in his book: What gets lost through this supposed translation of cognition models is the unconscious. One therein loses the subject of the analytic experience and the object of Psychoanalysis.

THE OTHER WITHOUT THE OTHER. WHAT HOLDS AFTER THE OEDIPUS?

Guest lecturers

Éric Laurent (Paris)

Discussants

Mabel Graiver (Tel Aviv), Shlomo Lieber (Kfar Saba), Avi Rybnicki (Tel Aviv), Veronika Waitz (Vienna)

Topic of the lecture:

Freud foresaw the end of the patriachal hierarchy and formulated the symbolic father with the help of the myths of Totem and Taboo and Oedipus. With his statement in seminar 6 "There is no Other of the Other", Lacan radicalized Freud's orientation, which also relativizes the symbolic father and finally replaces it with "the names of the father" and the practice in direction of the real. The sufferings in today's culture like addictive behaviours, general listlessness and desorientation, the difficulty to keep some kind of structure for a certain time, complex clinical symptoms to which psychiatry is reacting with an avalanche of classification (e.g. DSM5), are confirming this direction. Psychoanalysis can offer a practice of desire as an alternative to the general helplessness.

PUBLIC LECTURE

POLITICAL CRISES IN THE EYES OF PSYCHOANALYSIS

by Gil Caroz (Brussels)

Topic of the lecture:

Every subject's history is marked by moments of a radical change that we call crisis, irrespective of the psychic structure. We can say the same thing about every psychoanalytic cure. After decisive moments, things are no longer how they used to be. We will take a closer look at those decisive moments in the psychoanalytic clinic and try to understand their logic.

Discussants

Daphna Amit-Selbst (Tel Aviv), Mabel Graiver (Tel Aviv), Norbert Leber (Linz), Shlomo Lieber (Kfar Saba), Avi Rybnicki (Tel Aviv)

Topic of the conference:

The multiple crises resulting from today´s globalized capitalism and its technological changes create new phenomena in the clinic of the 21st century, posing a challenge for psychoanalysis – if it wants to be up-to-date. New forms of “jouissance of the body” arise, which amongst other things question the concepts of repression and the classical Freudian unconscious. What is the unconscious today, especially a Lacanian unconscious? Are the structural classifications of psychosis, neurosis and perversion sufficient? We focus on these questions from  the perspective of hysteria. How can we deal with moments of crisis in the psychoanalytic practice? In what way can we think a relation between the unconscious and the Lacanian „parlêtre“, like Jacques-Alain Miller suggested in his presentation of the topic for the WAP-congress in 2016? Do we encounter a different real today? One that Lacan talked of as being a secret of the speaking body and of the unconscious?

LECTURE AND CLINICAL STUDY DAY

THE BODY IN ORDINARY PSYCHOSIS

Guest lecturer: Florencia Shanahan

Topic of the conference:

When Freud started to listen to the stories of women that were suffering from their bodies, this became the hour of birth for psychoanalysis.

It was an epoch that was shaped by repressed sexuality and prohibitions, which ultimately lead to the discovery of the Freudian unconscious. Today, social life is different, the object is at its zenith and the grand narratives and ideals are unable to provide the function of a compass for the regulation of Jouissance in the absence of the Other.

How can one take account of these things with Lacans teachings in a clinic in which an increasing number of symptoms are not metaphorical? What is a body in psychoanalysis and how can you take it into account in the direction of the cure?

FILM PRESENTATION

À CIEL OUVERT / LIKE AN OPEN SKY

"Language is like a comet that hits the planet which is the body." With this simple picture, an employee at Le Courtil describes that initial moment that makes us human. Le Courtil - that is the name of a Belgian institution that is first of all a place to live and work. À Ciel Ouvert (Like An Open Sky) by Mariana Otero shows the daily clinical work with psychotic children that is founded on the ethics as formulated by Jacques Lacan.

It is part of the work at Le Courtil to do without labelizing and categorizing children. Insteand of using attributions like "psychotic" or "autistic", the children are considered beings that were hit by the "language comet" in a particular way that puts a heavy strain on their life in society and that creates a large reservoir of anxiety in their fellow human beings. Therefore, at Le Courtil, the task of listening to every child's subjective "solution arrangement", a connection of language-body-world, is undertaken. Then follows the attempt to start working with these subjective and always unique solutions in a way that makes new connections of speaking to the social bond of "our" language possible. These daily "new inventions" however also require an institution that had to newly invent its own structures of organisation in order to be able to fulfill these tasks and Le Courtil, until today, follows its own and surprisingly unusual path. Mariana Otero has managed to portray this "invention from day to day" in a touching and sensitive way.

Afterwards, GUY POBLOME (Brussels) will be in conversation with Roman Widholm (Vienna) and Helga Treichl (Vienna).

THE BEGINNING OF A PSYCHOANALYTIC CURE -

PHENOMENA AND STRUCTURE

Guest lecturers und lecturers

François Leguil (Paris) Marco Mauas (Tel Aviv) Avi Rybnicki (Tel Aviv)

Respondents

Perla Miglin (Tel Aviv) Magda Sorger-Domenigg (Vienna)

Topic of the conference:

“The training of the psycho-analyst requires that he should know, in the process through which he guides his patient, what it is around which the movement turns … it is what I designate under the term the desire of the psycho-analyst“ (Seminar XI, p230 ).

We raise the question of the beginning. Which phenomena serve as an axis in finding this center, which allow the analyst to direct the cure and which coax the analysant to speak?

THE UNCONSCIOUS IN THE PSYCHOANALYTIC TREATMENT -

TIME, REPETITION, DRIVE

25 people took part in the seminar on the 20th and 21st of January, 2017.

As usual, blocks of theory and the work on clinical cases were alternating.

Some topics referred to transference, repetition and language.

Regarding the repetition, differences between symbolic, imaginary and real transference were pointed out. Real transference is about effects of the body.

For transference as resistance, the following can be said: With every opening of the unconscious, Lacan says, "that is the structure of all unconscious formations: dreams, slips of the tongue, puns, the symptom", the Other is already there. Transference thus closes the unconscious, that is to say, its function is resistance: resistance in transference.

Transferene is not repetition. In transference, I believe to find what I am missing and the unconsciuos is closing. In repetition, a failure without formation repeats itself. It does not stop searching and does not find a point of fixation. What has not been taken up into the fantsma, repeats itself.

Negative transference is very specific. It's neither hatred nor critique, it means always keeping an eye on the analyst.

In psychoanalytic work, transference leads to a closing and at the same time, it hints at the realization of the subject's divison. It's a work that orients itself towards desire, the "beauty behind the shutters" (quoting Lacan).

Regarding language, there are differences between the enunciation and the enunciated.

Language inscribes itself like a parasite coming from the Other. The neurotic's constant question therefore is, "what are you telling me when you say that?" The neurotic blurs his own division, thinks he is the master of his speech and doesn't want to know anything about his desire. Therefore, it's important for the analysand to speak.

Topic of the conference

"The space of a lapse no longer carries any meaning (or interpretation), then only is one sure that one is in the unconscious. One knows. But one has only to be aware of the fact to find oneself outside it. (...) All I can do is tell the truth. No, that isn't so - I have missed it. There is no truth that, in passing through awareness, does not lie." 1

1 Lacan J., "Preface to the English edition of Seminar XI' in The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis, Tr. A. Sheridan, Penguin, London 1979 p.xxxix (Autres ecrits, p. 571)

To construct a case

The construction of a case follows the idea of Freud to do "the other portion of the work in psychoanalysis"2. An idea that bases on the desire of the psychoanalyst.

In constructions in Analysis Freud writes: "He (the analyst, NL) has to make out, what has been forgotten from the traces it has left behind or more correctly, to construct it. The time and manner in which he conveys his constructions to the person who is being analysed, as well as the explanations with which he accompanies them, constitute the link between the two portions of the work of analysis, between his own part and that of the patient." 3

Materials to construct lost memories are 'the symptom, inhibitions, dreams, ideas, affective impulses, reactions, repetitions, actions and transference', so Freud. Concerning that Jaques-Allain Miller writes that to "build the construction is to make a simulacrum of this whole from the bits, a simulacrum of the completeness of the unconscious." 4 "Freud was faced with the evidence", so Miller, "that there's always a reminder." Lacan formalized this question through writing the A with a bar. "Autre barré" so Miller, "is that, what always remains out of step between the whole and the bits. If there's something that makes construction necessary, then it's that - S(A)5

During our clinical day we will try with the help of four clinical cases to take a closer look to those materials Freud wrote about. We will question them concerning their application for constructions of the analyst and the patient. The work done during our last conference of the VPS in November 2016 with the theme 'The Beginning of a Psychoanalytical Cure - Phenomena and Structure' concerning the questions of transference, the saying and the said with its inscriptions into the body as well as the structure of time of the unconscious will be our point of orientation.

PATIENT INTERVIEW

with

Hervé Castanet

Countries that are active in the organisations of the Freudian Field have a long-standing tradition and years of experience with the instrument of clinical-psychoanalytic patient interviews. This clinical instrument has been made available for psychosocial institutions and takes place in the institutions.

The interviewee talks about his own suffering in a highly subjective manner that is often situated beyond the usual modes of understanding and classifying into established scientific categories. The interview goes into a direction in which a subject bears testimony to the uniqueness, incomparability and unclassifiability of his suffering. However, it requires a specific kind of ethics on the side of the interviewer to hear this uniqueness.

Hervé Castanet kindly agreed to hold the first patient interview in Vienna.

CLINICAL DAY

ARGUMENT FOR THE CLINICAL DAY

“A subject in the fog” who has lost its coordinates for speech, for desire, described this image: “I image myself in front of a surgeon, without a penis, without anything in that place, just pubic hair.” Furthermore, a number of childhood daydreams have the same content – no longer having a penis. On another occasion, he described an imagined scene, “Bodies are making love”. He sees them from below. He cannot make out which is the man and which is the woman.

The clinical case of Castanet gives us an account of the loss of the phallic function, about the downfall of the names of the father and marks the beginning of a discrete clinical work beyond the binary clinic. From the work with “rare cases”, the research project of ordinary psychosis was developed, which initiates our work on this clinical day with Hervé Castanet and Pamela King. The “rare cases” meanwhile have become inflationary today. We live in the time of the nullified sexual variations of difference and perversion. Nobody believes in the Other anymore who doesn’t exist.

On Friday evening, before the clinical day will take place, we will listen to a public speech of Her-vé Castanet about the shift from perversion to père-version.
